The construction industry has many vibrant and innovative players that are focusing on the future to help their businesses thrive.
Here’s an overview of a few top-ranking construction companies and subcontractors that have recently been spotlighted on the lists created by media and other websites. Though the list is far from full, FUEL has picked some of the companies that are doing truly remarkable things.
HB McClure Company
Founded in 1914, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania-based HB McClure Company has about 500 employees and provides a variety of HVAC services, including heating, cooling, geothermal systems, backup generators and more. Forbes has recently listed HB McClure on its Small Giants 2017 list, which recognizes companies that value greatness over growth. The $800 million company is 100 per cent employee owned. According to Forbes, company CEO Bob Whalen once declined an acquisition offer for the company after having learned the company paid commissions to its field staff when they made extra sales. Simply put, he didn’t want to sell unneeded services or items to his customers.
PCL is made up of a group of independent construction companies in the United States, Canada, and Australia. The company ranks No. 98 on Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work for in 2017, which highlights its employee-ownership model. PCL offers stock options to employees, and a majority own shares. Long-term employees often receive dividends exceeding their salaries. The $6.7 billion company, which has more than 4,400 employees, has also established a culture of giving. It regularly participates in fundraising and volunteering projects. PCL helps to support the causes that employees find most important through events and campaigns, and by giving employees time off work to volunteer.
Power Home Remodeling
Power Home Remodeling, a Chester, Pennsylvania-based company that specializes in window, door, siding and roof replacement. It has been listed as No. 10 on Glassdoor’s Best Places to Work 2017 list in its annual Employees Choice Awards. Employees praised the company in many areas, including its high earning potential, unique workplace culture, growth opportunities, leadership team, regular lineup of events, and appreciation for their co-workers. Power Home also has many mission-driven initiatives. Founded in 1992, the company has more than 1,800 employees and forecasted its revenue at $425 million for 2016.
Envirosolar Power, which provides homes and businesses with solar, energy storage and energy management services, is listed at No. 2 on the Inc. 5000 2017 list of the fastest-growing companies in the U.S. Founded in 2012, the Fort Worth, Texas-based energy company has about 85 employees and offers free energy assessments to determine the best solar setup for a home or business, as well as installation and maintenance of their solar energy systems. Envirosolar reported revenue of $37.4 million in 2016, a 36,000 per cent increase over the previous three years. The company also serves as a resource for the benefits of solar power use and financing the energy source.
At No. 42 on the Inc. 5000 2017 list of fastest-growing companies, BlackRock Construction is the top-ranking company on the list in the construction category. Based in South Burlington, Vermont, BlackRock provides residential and commercial construction, as well as real estate development. Its services include construction management, general contracting, planning and permitting, property management, and design-build services for projects large and small. The company posted $14.4 million in revenue in 2016, which means a 6,611 per cent growth over the previous three years.
